Arará Rapé Canela de Velho is a foundational grounding Rapé, commonly used within the living tradition of the Arará tribe. It’s a fitting first Rapé for those seeking to return to the body and find a centered, grounded state.
At its heart is Canela de Velho (Miconia albicans), known as “skin of the elders.” This plant holds a long history in Brazilian folk medicine, where its aerial parts have traditionally been prepared as an infusion and valued for their soothing, anti-inflammatory qualities. In the Rapé, it lends the blend its characteristic depth and grounding presence.
About the Arará people
The Arará call themselves Ukarãngmã — “people of the red ara,” after the scarlet macaw. Based in the Brazilian state of Pará, they are a small community of around 200 people, so closely bound that every member can trace their origin back to a single ancestral woman. Much of daily life unfolds in the village square of Laranjal, where respected family groups share a handful of communal houses built from wood and palm leaves gathered in the forest.
Passionate hunters and fishermen, the Arará were historically known as great warriors, moving through the forest and forming ties with neighboring groups. Alongside the hunt, they tend gardens of cassava, sweet potato, corn, banana, and pineapple. When hunters return with a good catch, the meat is shared, fermented drinks are poured, and the whole community celebrates for days — singing and playing flutes late into the night. For feasts and rituals, the Arará paint their skin in bold, striking patterns using genipapo, a natural black dye.
To hold this Rapé is to hold a thread of that world. Approach it with respect: set your intention, take your time, and let prayer guide the way you work with it.
